New Curators
Art is a powerful tool that can take us to unexplored places, tell untold stories, and evoke emotions that words cannot express. It has the ability to connect people from all walks of life and bring joy to our lives. However, art has become elitist, too exclusive and unattainable for many in today's world.
My love for art started at a young age when my father was an apprentice at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. While he finished his shift, my mother would take us to the museum after hours to explore. This experience ignited my passion for art, which has continued to grow over time.
Unfortunately, many people from underrepresented backgrounds are not given the same opportunities to engage with art. This is due to the elitism and high cost associated with the art world. Shockingly, individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds are almost 30% less likely to attend any art events as adults. This means that out of the 12 million adults in England, almost 8 million are unable to experience art on an equal footing.
As the Chairperson of New Curators, I am proud to say that we are determined that reality. New Curators is a charity founded by world-renowned curators, Mark Godfrey and Kerryn Greenberg, providing a paid 12-month curatorial training programme to aspiring young curators from lower socio-economic backgrounds around the world, right here in London.
Our first cohort has just started their year-long journey, with art experts and galleries from around the world at their fingertips. A lot of hard work went into bringing our 11 students to the UK, and we can't wait to see what they will bring to the art world
